Varamahalakshmi Festival or Varalakshmi Viratham is conducted to celebrate Goddess Lakshmi and invoke her blessings for all-round prosperity. It usually falls on a Friday during the month of Shravana. This festival involves not just the Pooja but also the preparations prior to it, which includes decoration of the idol and the house. To do the decorations,what do we need?

Decorative Diyas (Lamps)

Diyas light the surrounding; hence, they are a symbol of positivity and auspiciousness. Diyas are made of different materials in general like silver, terracotta, brass, etc. These can be reused as well.

Flower Decoration

Flower decoration is the important decoration for Varalakshmi Pooja as this is done to decorate the Kalasam, Mandap, Amman Mugham and the house on the whole. One can also choose flowers to make garlands in various color combinations.

LED lights

LED lights make for an interesting decorative item as you can opt for multi-colored ones.

Pooja Mantap

Making or buying the Pooja Mandap for the idol would be the most important preparation for the pooja. You can find various fancy and traditional ones in the market, so you can pick the one of your choice. But, if you are interested in making one it would be the best thing to do, as Gods and Goddesses accept anything made by us whole-heartedly and it would also be therapeutic.

Coconut Decoration

Coconut should be placed on the opening of the pot used for kalasam. It should be smeared with turmeric paste and kum kum (vermillion). Eyes can be bought from the market and fixed on the coconut.

Decoration of the Idol

Decorating the idol is most important in Varalakshmi Pooja. The Kalasam is adorned with Ambal Mugham (face of the Goddess), jewels and other accessories and worshipped.

Rangoli

Rangoli is a design drawn on the entrance of the house with rice flour. Traditionally, it is drawn for feed tiny creatures like ants. Hence, it is drawn everyday in front of the house. On special occasions it is made colourful, and the same is done for Varalakshmi Pooja too.
